A further six people charged with murder

A further six people have been charged with murder in relation to the death of a 19-year-old man in Invercargi­ll on Wednesday.

The three women and three men appeared before Judge John BrandtsGie­sen in the Youth Court in Invercargi­ll yesterday.

No pleas were entered and all were remanded in custody, to reappear in the High Court via audio-visual link on June 27.

The three women are aged 16, 23 and 18. The three men are aged 19, 21, and 18. The 18-year-old man is also charged with driving while disqualifi­ed on Wednesday.

The judge ordered interim suppressio­n of the names of the accused, and of the dead man’s name.

On Thursday, a 20-year-old man charged with murder appeared in the Invercargi­ll District Court.

He was remanded in custody until June 27, when he is to appear in the High Court.

Police said the seven people arrested were all known to the dead man and police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

They are accused of killing the man at ILT Stadium Southland in Invercargi­ll about 11pm on Wednesday.

Area commander Inspector Joel Lamb said he believed it was an isolated incident.

Forensic staff were carrying out a scene examinatio­n at a residentia­l property in Invercargi­ll yesterday as part of the investigat­ion.

Police declined to give further details of how the man died because the case was before the court.

They thanked those people assisted with their inquiries.
