Get our skates on

Thank you to Ice World and Invercargill Spring Festival for bringing ice skating back to Invercargill.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had a rink permanently in Invercargill again?

It was cool to see everyone enjoying themselves as well as getting some exercise.

Not all of us can afford to go to Gore.

Since the council wants to make Invercargill family friendly, why not an affordable activity, not weather dependent, that encourages skill and is for most ages?

I have fond memories as a child of our old rink - and of Roller City.

An ice rink would make a good accompaniment for the upcoming trampoline attraction.

Come on city council, on behalf of the kids - big and small, young and the young at heart. N Smith Invercargill

Politics and footy

I am interested in politics. I don’t like watching rugby.

I reckon more would join me in that view if the World Cup final ran for 70 minutes and was a close affair ... but then the broadcasters decided that the rest of the game would be shown two or three weeks later.

Unfortunately, the same fiasco is NZ First and its negotiations with the major parties.

They said we would know about a week ago. Then it got delayed because the NZ First board had to approve which way they would lean and last minute travel undid that time frame.

Now the board hasn’t got an agreed position, so we have faced further delays.

Many Kiwis who voted in record numbers this election will be put off doing so next time round. That may disengage new and young voters.

Maybe the two larger parties should form a strong government, with over 75 per cent of the support of the voters, after the next time.

That would leave NZ First and Greens in no man’s land for the future.

Is just having two large parties (like the US, Britain and Australia) such a bad thing?

Both National and Labour are not far away from each other.

What is wrong with our current minority parties and their members, working within a larger party? Nobby Clark Invercargill

Park plaudits

Queens Park is very beautiful. Whenever I walk there, I admire the nice flowers, plants, shrubs, trees. Yesterday was no exception. The colourful park with its eye- catching tulips and blossoms is a great asset to the city.

Thanks, you gardeners, for doing a fantastic job. Doetie Keizer Riverton

Priorities

Thank you Ray Wilson (October 14) for his openness and kind words. As Ray states, the lawmakers of our land have failed us by going soft on homosexuality and that’s the reason screens are being flooded with reporters, and their supporters, who are openly gay.

Has NZ taken over from Kings Cross as the gay capital of the South Pacific? Same-sex marriages are not something to be proud of as the demeanour of our so-called leaders would suggest. Is that a thriving community?

Perhaps the Central Otago District Council could hire out Eden Hore’s dresses to those crossing the Tasman to marry, and the takings could be used for another $500,000 trophy toilet with music, whilst ignoring what’s happening with facilities under the ground at Clyde.
