Southland’s representative golfers are preparing to take on national and South Island competitions.

The Southland women’s team and Southland men’s masters team have both been named for their upcoming tournament.

The women’s team to contest the South Island Interprovincial at Balmacewen, Dunedin, on October 28 and 29, is Angela Gerken, Olivia Frost, Jody Drysdale, Kate McGregor, Helen Baird, Fiona Murray, Geraldine Todd and Bronwyn O’Brien. The team will be managed by Anita Fraser. Robyn Pullar was unavailable for selection.

The Southland men’s masters team to contest the national Freyberg Masters at Whitford Park, Auckland, in early November has also been named. It includes Simon Boland, Glenn Brinsdon, Glen Sutherland, Paul Adams (Captain) and Phil Davis. Ngarimu Paraki is the non-travelling reserve and the team will be managed by Bryan Dynes. Craig O’Rorke was unavailable for selection.

Queens Park Golf Club’s annual Golf in the Park tournament played out over the weekend, with 164 in the field.

The competition was dominated by Queens Park members and was won by the team of Russell Sinclair, Gloria Sinclair, Trevor Neilson and Jo Sangatini with a score of 242.

Runners-up were John Moore, Bill Boyce, Phil Hawkes and Kawa Honotapu with 236, and third place went to the team of Richard Wheeler, Ewan Thwaites, Isla Palmer and Sharon Cronin with 235.

The Southland team finished fifth overall at the National Eagles U17 Tournament in Napier recently.

Jessica Hwangbo won the 54 Hole Stableford section, and Liam Hewitt was seventh overall; great results from Southland’s up and coming talent.
