One-night crime spree in Gore

A teenager and his co-offenders went on a one-night crime spree in Gore on January 25.

Nicholas Bonney, 18, appeared before Judge Bernadette Farnan in the Gore District Court yesterday on six charges of burglary, six charges of theft from vehicles, six charges of unlawfully interferin­g with a motor vehicle and intentiona­l damage.

Defence lawyer Tina Williams said there was a certain degree of the offending being ‘‘opportunis­t’’.

‘‘I accept that it may have been opportunis­t but it became premeditat­ed. There are a large number of victims and you continued to offend while on bail, including threatenin­g to kill someone from Probation Services,’’ Judge Farnan said.

Bonney was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, with post-release conditions and ordered to pay onethird of the reparation costs.

Assault

Rulon David Ngatai-Ira Chaffey, 27, freezing worker, of Mataura, was remanded to November 29 for sentencing for male assaults $772.40 for reckless driving, intentiona­l damage and driving with a blood alcohol level of 153mcg on September 9.

Samuel Ward, 19, was disqualifi­ed from driving for nine months and fined $250 for driving with a sustained loss of traction at Oamaru on October 5 and failing to stop, driving while suspended and refusing to give identifyin­g particular­s at Gore on October 27.

Drugs

Jason Scott Honeyman, 38, of Waipahi, was sentenced to 80 hours’ community work for possession of a pipe, cannabis seed, utensils and cannabis plant on October 10.

Receiving

Travis James Hayward, 20, farm hand, was sentenced to 11 months’ jail and ordered to pay $6000 in reparation for receiving on May 8.

Wilful damage

Tonia Joyce Ramage, 28, of Mataura, was sentenced to four months’ community detention and ordered to pay $1709.04 reparation for wilful damage and possession of an offensive weapon on July 3.
