Giggs loves the All Blacks way
As unlikely as it sounds, Dan Carter’s selfless mentorship of Beauden Barrett in the All Blacks could help pave the way for the rise of Wales as an international football force.
Wales football coach Ryan Giggs has credited All Blacks great Carter with providing him with valuable insight into developing his side into a global force in the roundball game, particularly in the area of developing young players within the international framework.
Giggs told Welsh media he had spoken to Carter around how the All Blacks were so good at introducing young players into a well-established and successful international side.
The Welsh coach and former Manchester United great wants to develop his side along similar lines.
Giggs told the WalesOnline website that Carter’s advice on how senior players in the All Blacks happily mentor youngsters who will one day contend for their positions because it has seen as being for the greater good of the team. Carter cited the example of the work he did with the young Beauden Barrett who has now morphed into the finest player on the planet and a No 10 considered to be on a par with Carter at his best.
‘‘I spoke to Dan Carter a few months ago and he was saying about the New Zealand rugby team and when he was there how he had to look after Beauden Barrett,’’ Giggs said.
‘‘He was after his place, but in New Zealand you have to look after the next generation.
‘‘I thought it was fantastic that if he didn’t, he would have got hammered from the All Blacks media, the fans, and that’s just part and parcel of why the All Blacks are so great.’’
