Phillips and Munro duel a thriller

-

A monster switch hit from Glenn Phillips was straight out of the Colin Munro playbook as the two Black Caps slugged it out in the Caribbean Premier League.

In the end Munro’s Trinbago Knight Riders got home by four wickets in a last ball thriller at Lauderhill, Florida, yesterday, after Phillips set the game alight with some power and innovation in his knock of 80 off 55 balls for Jamaica Tallawahs.

Unwanted by the Black Caps for their Twenty20 series against Pakistan in October, Phillips hit five sixes in his knock highlighted by a monster switch hit, which Auckland Aces team-mate Munro has used to good effect. There was also a cheeky lap shot for six before Phillips holed out to one more switch hit attempt.

With help from South African David Miller (72 not out off 34 balls), the Tallawahs looked home at an above par 182-5 off their 20 overs, after Ross Taylor (7) missed out to a slog sweep.

It looked even better when power hitters Chris Lynn (2) and Brendon McCullum (8) departed cheaply before Munro and Darren Bravo attacked.

Munro (67 off 51) hit four sixes and Bravo five (50 off 35) as they got the Knight Riders close before Dwayne Bravo (36 off 11) hit three successive sixes off left-armer Krishmar Santokie .

Needing three off the last ball from Oshane Thomas, Javon Scantlebury-Searles cracked a short, wide offering through cover for four to spark wild celebrations.
