United, Burnley bow out of cup
Goalkeeper Sergio Romero was sent off as Manchester United suffered a humiliating third round League Cup exit by losing 8-7 on penalties to Championship side Derby County yesterday.
Romero was shown a red card in the 67th minute after handling the ball outside the 18-yard box, meaning United’s third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, a former Derby player himself, had to contest the shootout.
Grant was unable to keep out any of Derby’s eight penalty attempts though, with the game decided when a lame effort from United defender Phil Jones was saved by Scott Carson.
It is a big scalp for Derby coach Frank Lampard, who is in his first season at the helm after spending most of his playing career at Chelsea.
‘‘I’m a bit shellshocked [but] in a good way,’’ Lampard said.
‘‘What a performance from the team and in terms of personality. To have the personality to step up and take penalties and perform the way they did, I’m just a proud manager, they were great.
‘‘I am trying to build a group to be successful and nights like this are incredible. To go against world-class players and play that way, it’s right up there.’’
United had led through Juan Mata’s third-minute strike that completed a flowing move. But Harry Wilson equalised with a freekick in the 59th and United’s problems deepened when Romero was sent off.
Derby made the extra man count when Jack Marriott headed home from close range, a goal that was confirmed by a VAR review in the 85th. Marouane Fellaini came to United’s rescue in the fifth minute of stoppage time with an equaliser.
The shootout failure saw United eliminated from the third round of English football’s second-tier knockout competition for the first time in 11 years.
Meanwhile, a disappointing start to the season for Burnley and All Whites striker Chris Wood got worse when they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by League One side Burton Albion.
After exceeding expectations last season, Burnley have made a woeful start to the season, being eliminated from the Europa League and registering their first EPL victory only last Sunday.
Burnley took the lead in the 39th minute through a Kevin Long header from a corner but the hosts equalised in the 62nd minute and two minutes after Wood was replaced by Sam Vokes, Albion netted the winner.
Manchester City easily beat another third-tier side, Oxford, with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden sealing a 3-0 win.
