Veitch relocating to Bali retreat business

- Jackson Thomas

Bali has become somewhat of a haven for former Kiwi sports personalities, with Tony Veitch the latest to relocate to the Indonesian island, where he has started a bed and breakfast business.

Broadcaster Veitch’s career hit a brick wall when it was revealed he had broken his former partner’s back in 2006. His return to TV with Sky was shut down in 2017, following considerable public backlash.

This week he announced via his online page Veitchy On Sport that he has given away sports broadcasting indefinitely, instead choosing to focus on a new venture: Vitality Villas.

It is marketed as a retreat for people who are burnt out, and promises to offer ‘‘Bali at its best’’, based in Canggu.

‘‘This place is incredibly special to me. Media and sport has been my life but since I came here [Bali] a few months ago and based myself here we had a vision – we wanted to make Bali easy for Kiwis,’’ Veitch said online.

‘‘The concept we have created is for people who, like me, have been through a lot when it comes to burn out. It’s a retreat business for guys and girls, because guys often get forgotten about, it’s a bed and breakfast business as well and it’s about helping people discover the Bali we love. I’m doing something well out of my comfort zone.’’

Veitch said the idea came to him a year ago after he visited a retreat in Australia. ‘‘That changed my life.

‘‘I got tools and mechanisms to start eating well, reduce the number of beverages I was drinking and honestly it led me where we are now,’’ he said.

He is not the only former Kiwi sports personalty to make the move to the white sandy beaches of Indonesia.

Veitch’s former Game of Two Halves colleague and rugby league bad boy Brent Todd also lives and works in Bali. Veitch is a director and shareholder with Melissa Joan Carroll of Vitality Villas Ltd, which was incorporated with the Companies Office on May 31, 2018.
