Survey into safety of bridge

The Gore District Council has launched a survey to find out if pedestrians and cyclists feel safe using the Gore traffic bridge.

The survey is part of an investigation into options to improve walking and cycling links between east Gore and the rest of the town, and provide better links between existing and proposed cycle trails.

Among the options is a proposal for a bridge only for cyclists and pedestrians upstream of the existing traffic bridge. A new structure across the Mataura River could also potentially accommodate a new pipeline should the council go ahead with plans to rationalise the Hilbre Ave water treatment plant, in north Gore, and the east Gore water treatment plant into one, as flagged in its 10-Year Plan.

Transport manager Peter Standring said the promotion of cycling and walking trails aligns with the Gore District Trails Feasibility Study.

It was also in keeping with the Government’s philosophy of promoting a healthier lifestyle and more connected communities.

‘‘The vision of the feasibility study was to have a cycle, walking and horse riding friendly district, where locals and visitors have easy access to quality trails.

‘‘We believe access is presently restricted by having only one link between east Gore and the rest of the town.’’

The survey will assist with the development of a business case for finding an alternative route and the level of funding subsidy the project may attract from the New Zealand Transport Agency, Standring said.

‘‘We are keen to hear from pedestrians and cyclists who use the bridge to find out how safe they feel.

‘‘We also like to hear from anyone who would consider walking or cycling around the town if there was a dedicated route for them.’’

The survey will be open until Friday, November 23, and is available on the council’s website or atsurveymonkey.com/ r/GoreTrafficBridgeSafetySurvey.
