A message from the president

-

A warm southern welcome from the Southland Motorcycle Club, to the 14th running of the Burt Munro Challenge.

The weather will be warmer and the racing hotter than ever before! Competitors and spectators from around the world gather to experience seven events in five days.

There’s something for everyone so come and enjoy. We hope all of our hard work will make it the most memorable Challenge to date!

This year we commence with the Southland Honda Have a Go Day on Wednesday, followed by an impressive line-up of machines taking on the iconic Bluff hill on Thursday morning with the Star Insurance NZ Hill Climb Champs. Then in the evening, it’s time for the HarleyDavidson Twilight Drag Racing at Teretonga Park. On Friday, the Indian Motorcycle NZ Beach Racing Champs will thunder along Oreti Beach from 5.30pm.

On Saturday you can look forward to back-to-back racing starting with the E Hayes & Sons Teretonga Sprint Races followed by the fast and furious Partmaster Oreti Park Speedway. To round off a fantastic weekend, join us in Invercargill for the Honda Invercargill Street Races.

I would like to thank our sponsors and community funding bodies. To the ILT Foundation, Invercargill City Council, Jack Daniels, E Hayes & Sons, Star Insurance, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian Motorcycle, Shiny Side Up and all of the local businesses and organisations that continue to support us each year, a huge thank you.

With Invercargill and the wider Southland region steeped with the history of Burt Munro, those new to the Challenge and our returning visitors will find motorcycle enthusiasts, warm southern hospitality and nods to our legend of speed at every corner.

There’s nothing quite like the Burt and the excitement it brings to the region. With masses of bikes and spectators converging on Southland from the 5-9 February, your safety is our priority so please take your time, ride safely and be aware of the extra traffic on our southern roads.

Let’s get ready for one hell of a week of racing!

Warm regards, Andy Underhay PRESIDENT SOUTHLAND MOTORCYCLE CLUB INC.
