Six60 heading south on Grassroots Tour

- Stuff reporters

It’s not every day one of New Zealand’s biggest bands plays a gig on Rakiura, but that is what Six60’s The Grassroots Tour is all about.

Kicking the tour off at Pōtahi Marae in the Far North, the band will be playing in small towns and cities across Aotearoa in April and May, with shows in Invercargill on May 7 and in Gore on May 8 before ending the tour at the Stewart Island Community Centre on May 14.

Swapping stadiums for intimate venues, Six60 will be performing rearranged, stripped-down, acoustic versions of their biggest hits.

“For years on social media, fans have been asking us to record acoustic versions of our songs, for weddings, funerals and everything in between ... we felt that if we were ever going to do it, we wanted to do it with our fans,” the band said in a statement. “That’s what excites us, bringing the people that made us the band we are, made the songs into the hits – they are along for the ride. We can’t wait to visit these special pockets of Aotearoa and bring these songs to life.”

Each stage will be set up to look like a recording studio, giving fans the opportunity to feel like a fly on the wall as the band re imagine their hits, promising a unique performance in each town.

Six60 will be joined by opening act Makayla (Ngāti Kahungungu ki Heretaunga, Te Whakatōhea), the latest artist to be signed to their label Massive.

Tickets for the tour go on sale on March 4 and are likely to be limited given the size of the venues, which will be the Civic Theatre in Invercargill and St James Theatre in Gore.
