Southland data company expands operations further into Auckland

-

A Murihiku-based data company has expanded its operations, buying the assets of a data centre in the nation’s largest city.

T4 Group, a leading co-location data centre operator, has bought the assets of the East Tāmaki Data Centre in Auckland from Kyndryl Holdings, a multinational information technology infrastructure services provider, adding to its existing centres in Northland and Auckland.

Dean Addie, the group’s chief executive, said the purchase, for an undisclosed amount, was important for enhancing the organisation’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, security and resilience.

The organisation aimed to enhance the resilience and security of data infrastructure in Aotearoa, providing disaster recovery solutions and improving international connectivity. “We are thrilled to have signed this agreement with Kyndryl to acquire the data centre assets, servicing our existing customers and partnering with new,” Addie said.

“This strategic move underscores T4 Group’s unwavering dedication to improving New Zealand’s data centre infrastructure on a journey towards a greener and more resilient digital future.”

The site was an All-of-Governmentapproved tier 3+ site, meaning its network had multiple paths for power and cooling, systems in place to update and maintain it without taking it offline, and an offline

time of 1.6 hours annually.

T4 had exclusive rights to use the East Tāmaki site following an agreement with Kyndryl in March 2022.

Audrey Campbell-Frear, Kyndryl New Zealand’s managing director, said the companies would work together to ensure a smooth transition for data centre clients.

“We are pleased T4 Group have an unwavering commitment to excellence, and we are excited to build on our longstanding

partnership with T4 as they increase their presence in the East Tāmaki Data Centre and provide high-quality data centre services to local customers.”

The acquisition complemented the group’s existing operations and would support the development of its new hyperscale data centre which was set to begin construction in Invercargill in 2024.

It would be one of two data centres planned to operate in the region.
