Ex-ICC chief takes on newly created role

- Chris Tobin

Former Invercargill City Council chief executive Clare Hadley has been appointed to a newly created position as general manager of the Manuherekia Catchment Group.

In February last year, Hadley was replaced as Invercargill City Council chief executive by council’s then finance and assurance group manager Michael Day. Hadley had been in the position since 2018 and had a month left on her five-year contract.

Hadley said when she saw the catchment group position advertised, in a part of the country she loved, it made sense for her to apply.

"I remember living in the area before the dam and playing hockey and swimming as a kid in the local waterways,” she said.

“I'm drawn to the beautiful hills, the climate, and my passion, cycling. I always say that life is better on two wheels. I’m a trail biker, mountainbiker, and enjoy riding pillion on the back of my husband's motorbike. I’m genuinely excited to move to the area.”

Co-chairpersons of the catchment group Anna Gillespie and Andrew Paterson were delighted with the appointment.

“We’re thrilled to have Clare join us, bringing her significant experience and mana to the role. We’re confident she will excel in the challenges ahead,” Gillespie said.

“Clare will be a driving force to help us achieve our vision and will serve as an important central point of contact,” Paterson said.

Hadley was chief executive of the Rangitikei District Council (2007-12) and Nelson City Council (2012-17).

She starts as Manuherekia Catchment Group general manager on April 1.
