Sharks sink to seventh straight NBL defeat

- Brayden Lindsay

Does anyone know if Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig have got some spare time on their hands at the minute?

The Southland Sharks are in a hole, zero wins, zero points and seven losses and with that record the James Bond actors could be the perfect recipe to solve a new mission how to win a game.

They tackle explosions, criminals and everything in between and their success could go a long way to turning around the Sharks’ fortunes.

Anyway, let’s be realistic, we know that won’t happen, however the Southland Sharks basketball side could really do with a victory to lift their confidence.

In seven games this season, the Sharks have scored 80 points once, and a single-digit overtime loss in the opening round was their best showing, and other than a 13-point defeat to the Jets in round two at home, they’ve been blown off the court in every other game.

On Saturday night against the defending champions Canterbury Rams, who looked well below their best, the Sharks were well-beaten 87-65 at the ILT Stadium in Invercargill. You know the team is struggling when the most excitement of the night came at halftime when spectators could dance to win a Sal’s pizza.

The Sharks, who welcomed back captain Alonzo Burton from injury for the clash, had made a habit of starting slow in matches this season, but they actually raced out to a 6-4 lead in the opening quarter before the wheels fell off.

Burton starred for the Sharks with 19 points, including five three points, four of which came in the third quarter, where the Sharks managed 26 points.

Big man Callum McRae also produced a solid showing with 16 points and 15 rebounds in what was otherwise a disappointing performance from the Sharks.

Americans Marcale Lotts, Caleb Asberry and LaGerald Vick were kept quiet by the Rams.

Small forward Brayden Inger would return from his stint in the United Kingdom next week and could be the cog the Sharks were missing to ignite their attack.

The Southland Sharks Rapid League side also fell to a defeat, losing 52-40 to the Rams, Connor Coll starred for the Sharks with 15 points.

Next up is the Nelson Giants at ILT Stadium Southland on May 3.
