Country joins town for Memory Walk
A charity initiative that started in Timaru is getting set to launch nationwide.
Alzheimers South Canterbury is holding a Memory Walk, from Strathallan and Stafford Sts up to the Piazza, to endorse the National Alzheimers Awareness campaign.
The walk was started in Timaru two years ago. Alzheimers South Canterbury said this year’s walk is more important than the past two as it is now becoming a New Zealandwide event.
South Canterbury has the highest proportion of people affected by dementia in the country.
Last year, 500 people joined the walk and this year organisers hope to have 1000 taking part.
‘‘Showing a united front at the Memory Walk will help show just how many people, from all walks of life, are affected, including families and caregivers.’’
It hopes each group will bring at least 10 members to help highlight the incidence and dispel the stigma related to alzheimers. ‘‘The Memory Walk is a chance for everyone in our community to honour the memory of loved ones, those affected, carers and even to honour your own precious memories.’’
Participants are asked to record their memories on cards and ribbons, which will be attached to a railing at the end of the walk. Participants will assemble in Strathallan St beside Community House, at 10.45 on Saturday, August 30, for the 11am start.
