Call for young helpers to collect for an hour
Wanted: Young legs, for Daffodil Day on August 29.
South Canterbury Cancer Society manager Gabrielle Hall said the organisation was after younger volunteers for Daffodil Day this year.
‘‘Some of the volunteers have been volunteering for 20 years, so it would be great to get some of the younger crowd for the street collection on the 29th. They just have to give an hour.’’
The society had got the support of more than 200 South Canterbury businesses and they would be ‘painting the town yellow’ for the week of August 22-29.
The society has provided the businesses with starter packs, including balloons and fabric daffodils.
‘‘They [the products in the starter pack] will be put up in the store front windows to show their support during the week before Daffodil Day. We have also got a volunteer army, but we still need about 150 volunteers,’’ she said.
The organisation, along with national sponsors ANZ, was also holding a fundraising golf tournament on August 22, teeing off at 11am.
The society was approaching its fundraising targets with a four-pronged approach, she said.
‘‘We have already delivered daffodils to businesses. We will have some volunteers approach businesses face to face. There will be collections on the day and counter boxes will be placed throughout South Canterbury.’’
