Talk to highlight Syrian conflict

- DAISY HUDSON

A South Canterbury group trying to support Syrian refugees is hoping a visit from a well-known broadcaster will help raise awareness for their cause.

Journalist Rachel Smalley will host a presentation about her work reporting on the Syrian conflict at an event in Timaru on Saturday.

Smalley has reported extensively on the Syrian Civil War and those who have fled the country for refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

She will talk about her experiences in the war-torn country at Timaru Girls’ High School on Saturday night, during an event hosted by Syria’s Forgotten Families South Canterbury.

The group’s spokesperson, Leigh Lawless, said Smalley’s talk would hopefully raise awareness of the plight of Syrian refugees.

‘‘Not only is it important that we are more aware of the situation, but to really hear stories from people who have been up to the camps.’’

A lot information being circulated about the refugees was negative, she said.

‘‘A lot of good can come out of understanding what’s going on. These are everyday people in extraordinary circumstances.’’

Lawless described the conflict as ‘‘the worst crisis of our generation’’.

The Council on Foreign Relations puts the death toll from the civil war at more than 470,000.

All proceeds from the event, which will include a silent auction, will be donated to World Vision’s Syria campain.

Smalley will talk about the Syrian conflict at Timaru Girls’ High School on Saturday at 7.30pm.
