Barker’s staff part of ‘most successful’ Sea2Sea yet

-

Staff at Barker’s of Geraldine have embarked on the business’ most successful Sea2Sea yet, the team coordinator says.

About 50 of the business’ 180 staff were taking part in the sixweek-long daily exercise challenge, process leader Stacey Guilford said.

About 150 South Canterbury organisations have teams in the challenge of completing between 30 and 60 minutes of exercise a day, to complete a virtual journey from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

Part of the challenge was also including five serves of fruit or vegetables in the daily diet.

‘‘We’ve taken part of the last few years but this year is probably been our most successful,’’ Guilford, one of Barker’s two Sea2Sea team coordinators, said.

Guilford had set up a Facebook page for participants to post photos of themselves during, before or after exercise, and there was an incentive for people posting on the page: a couple of personal training sessions were up for grabs.

‘‘That seems to be a bit of a goer.’’

She believed people were enjoying the opportunity to get together and to motivate each other.

People had been doing a range of sports to complete their 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise, including walking and playing golf, Guilford said.

Staff had been taking lunch time walks, meeting every second Sunday for walks around Talbot Forest and Geraldine, and Guilford had been setting up circuits for people to complete on Tuesdays.

‘‘So they’ve been finding it pretty alright, and I think the Facebook page has got people pretty motivated as well.’’

People had put in requests for the Tuesday circuits to continue, so Guilford believed there was motivation for the exercise habit to stick.
