Craighead’s smooth progress

Craighead crews continued their impressive progress on the second day of heats at the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro.

The over 15 lightweigh­t double of Sophie Tulley and Kate Jackson went straight to the final after winning their heat.

They will be serious title contenders having been the fastest qualifiers by over four seconds.

The under novice coxed four of Dani Walsh, Grace Izard, Sophie Lightbourn­e, Grace Williams and cox Jessie Williams also won their heat to progress.

They head to the semi-final with the third fastest time.

Phoebe Trolove joined Taylor Allan in the under 16 double to finish second in their heat, after Trolove qualified quickest in the under 16 single on Monday. to progress to the quarter finals.

Maddi Palmer and Zoe Leen also finished second in their heat of the under 17 double.

Craighead’s under 18 coxed quad of Sarah Templeton, Kate Jackson, Sophie Tulley, Eloise Gawler and Grace O’Sullivan also progressed safely with a second place.

Roncalli also had a good day on the water.

Ruby Young and Anna Gregan finished second in their under 17 double heat to progress to the quarter finals.

Young and Gregan then joined Mya Nevin, Charlotte O’Brien and cox Brittney McDowell to qualify for the semi-final of the under 17 coxed quad through finishing repechage.

Their under 17 coxed quad of Jack Gibbs, Sam Anderson, Antonio Frances- Rees, Tyrone Cox and McDowell also finished second to go through to the semifinals.

The boys’ quad however are medal contenders with the third fastest time across the four heats.

Cox also made the under 17 single quarter final by winning his repechage.

Timaru Girls’ High School’s under 17 double of Geraldine Moffatt and Kinnley McAllister won their heat to progress to the quarters, with the fifth quickest time.

Briar Mallinson and Blaize Lawrence are also proving a handy combinatio­n in a double, second in their progressin­g in both the under 15 and under 18 novice boats.

The Timaru Boys’ High School under 18 double of Brad Cvitanich and Tim Hepburn face a repechage after finishing in second place.

In that race only the winner went straight through to the semifinal.

Their time should see them comfortabl­y through to the semis on Thursday,

However they have 10 seconds to find to challenge the red hot Whakatane High School crew, who establishe­d themselves as gold medal favourites.

A number of other crews from the Timaru schools progressed while several will face repechages and quarter finals on Wednesday.
