78-year-old sinks second hole-in-one in 13 months

- STU PIDDINGTON

Temuka veteran golfer Faye Mulvey is certainly in the swing after sinking her second hole-inone in 13 months.

The 78-year-old again hit the perfect shot again on the par 3, No.11 hole at the Temuka Golf Club.

The only difference was this time she used her seven wood rather than her seven iron to attack the 111m hole.

‘‘I had never used my seven wood on No.11 before but the course was terribly heavy so I thought it might be a good plan.’’

Mulvey joked she never knew where the shot had come from as her recent form had been a bit poor. ‘‘I’ll gladly take it.’’

In February last year Mulvey hit her first hole-in-one after playing golf for 20 years.

‘‘It’s not quite the same feeling as your first but it is still pretty good.’’

Mulvey did not see the ball go in and thought her playing partner Graham Pooke was kidding.

‘‘Then he said he was serious and I thought wow.’’

Pooke was only playing with Mulvey after she told her regular partner, husband Brian, to have the day off.

‘‘He had played three days in a row and I wasn’t in vintage form, so I told him not to worry.

‘‘Brian did come down for the celebrations though.’’

In fact her husband has also scored an ace on the same hole and has five in total – a number Mulvey admits she’s unlikely to catch.

‘‘It was pretty special we’ve done it on the same hole, I guess I’m one up there now.’’

Mulvey said she took up golf after they retired to Temuka from Wellington.

‘‘I was looking for something new to do and Brian was a keen golfer.’’

Mulvey said between her husband and sister-in-law Frances Mulvey she had two pretty decent coaches. ‘‘But I will never be anywhere near as good as them.’’

Mulvey said she would be delighted if her success encouraged other retirees to take up golf.

‘‘It is a great game if you don’t want to sit around.’’

These days she plays off a 26 handicap. ‘‘It’s been shorter but it might not be again.

‘‘It doesn’t really matter as I just enjoy the game.’’

Mulvey will however have something to smile about next time she steps up on the No.11 tee at Temuka.
