- STU PIDDINGTON

Crusaders and Highlanders fans are in for an unexpected treat with the teams set to clash in Timaru on July 6.

The ‘friendly’ will be played during the Super Rugby break, while the British and Irish Lions tour New Zealand. The Thursday afternoon kick-off is scheduled for 3pm at Alpine Energy Stadium.

South Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Craig Calder said it was a great opportunity for fans of both teams to see them up close.

There will be a fan zone after the game, with the opportunity to meet and greet the players from both sides, he said.

‘‘There is a big Crusaders fan base here but also there are plenty of Highlanders supporters, so both will get a chance to show their colours.’’

Calder expected it would be a very good game.

‘‘Plenty of players will be pushing for starting places in both teams when Super Rugby resumes.’’

Adult tickets to the game would be $25 and children $10, with tickets going on sale a month before the game.

Calder said the South Canterbury Rugby Union was covering the travel costs and expenses of both teams, which were substantial. ‘‘We are budgeting to just break even, but that is why the adult tickets are $25.’’

Calder said the union had been actively communicating with the Crusaders franchise for opportunities to bring the team to Timaru.

‘‘The Crusaders playing Highlanders is perfect for us.’’

News of their favourite teams playing in Timaru has excited two the young fans.

Olly George, 10, said he was really excited the Highlanders were coming. ‘‘We will beat the Crusaders.’’ His friend Toby Carpenter, 11, was equally adamant the Crusaders would be victorious. ‘‘We are the top team.’’ Grant George said it was great young fans would get to see their team play in Timaru, rather than parents having to travel.
