Boys’ High finish second in Anzac tournament

- BRAYDEN LINDSAY

The Anzac Boys’ secondary school’s hockey tournament proved a successful one for Timaru Boys’ High.

They finished second in the sixteam tournament behind Christchurch Boys’ High School.

The tournament is being played under new rules which were used in India this year.

It rewards teams for scoring field goals by giving them two points, where penalty corner goals and strokes are just one point.

Timaru Boys’ ended the tournament with a three wins and two losses.

They outclassed Shirley Boys’ High School 12-2, with William Sharp, Liam Parker and Sean Rhodes scored doubles, while Oli Anderson and Tim Sheed found the back of the net.

It was a dominant performance from the side in white as they strung together some superb hockey.

Shirley showed glimpses of talent at times but their young side committed too many errors.

Sharp opened the scoring from a penalty corner before some good skills from Liam Parker saw him bag his second gaol of the tournament with a well taken chance.

Sheed, Parker, Rhodes with a double and Oli Anderson completed the .

Sharp, stepping as captain for Jono Ellis, grabbed his second shortly before half time.

Coach Ben Grant said finishing second was a nice way to cap off three days of hockey.

‘‘We’ll definitely take it but our hockey could’ve been better at times,’’ he said. ‘‘We seem to slip in and out of matches too often which isn’t ideal.’’

Five games in three days was hard.

‘‘The boys really started to feel it,’’ he said. ‘‘You could see in that final game it was tough on them. We missed Jono and Matt [Ellis] and Brad Cvitanich when he didn’t play in the middle. We had 12-13 players and all the other sides had 16-18 players to choose from.’’

Anderson’s late goal, secured Timaru Boys’ a 1-0 win against Otago Boys High School.

The girls tournament featuring Craighead and Timaru Girls’ High School gets underway today.
