Dad disgusted by carcasses left to rot in river
A South Canterbury man is disgusted to find carcasses dumped near a popular swimming spot – and wants those responsible to own up.
Ely Peeti, of Waitohi, said he was taking his children to a swimming spot near Albury at Rocky Gully bridge on Friday when he found seven deer heads, a sheep skin poorly skinned and a whole male pig gutted, all lying in water.
He was so shocked he uploaded a video to social media.
‘‘I couldn’t believe the smell, it was just rotten. I just want to find out who is responsible for doing this.’’
Peeti, a home-kill butcher, hunter, and taxidermist, suspects it was poachers responsible, but whatever the case, he is at a loss as to why anyone would dump them in the river.
‘‘It’s just disgusting, it shows just a blatant disregard for the environment. As a butcher, I try to make use of the whole animal. So to see the whole pig in there was disheartening.’’
Peeti removed the carcasses
‘‘It shows just a blatant disregard for the environment.’’ Waitohi local Ely Peeti
from the river.
‘‘Someone had to do it. The boar was pretty heavy. But this is near the headwaters of the Tengawai and Opihi rivers. And many of us swim in that water. So I would really like to know who is responsible for this.’’
Since he uploaded the video, it has been shared more than 80 times on Facebook.
‘‘The response has been pretty positive, a lot of people would like to see something done.
‘‘I don’t use social media that much, but this is something I just had to share.’’
He said he would like to see those responsible prosecuted.
‘‘I would think that what they did would be illegal. But whoever did it really needs to be held responsible. It’s just not on.’’
