New Caroline Bay entertainment lauded
Organisers of the Caroline Bay Carnival are taking stock of another ‘‘successful’’ event despite attendance levels being down on previous years.
Caroline Bay Association entertainment manager Kevin Fahey said overall participation throughout the carnival – which runs for 15 days from December 26 to January 13, had pleased organisers.
It finished on Sunday with The David Bowie Tribute Show – featuring acclaimed Bowie impersonator David Brighton, while Saturday featured AC/DC tribute act NZ/DC.
Fahey said it had been a busy carnival despite attendance numbers being down on previous years. He said poor weather in the lead up to the carnival may have contributed to lower crowd numbers.
‘‘We had a good concert each night, and the crowds have been reasonably good. We found that the income overall has been on the increase each day, but certainly the numbers haven’t been as large as some years.
‘‘People may have decided they might do something different, but the numbers probably aren’t too different, but certainly those that have been here have still spent some money.’’
Fahey said they were ‘‘very pleased’’ with how the carnival had run overall. ‘‘I think the people have liked the new entertainment that we’ve had a line up for, there’s been some new artists here this year, and we’re really pleased with how that’s gone.’’
This year’s musical line-up included a range of bands and performers from South Canterbury, New Zealand, Australia, and America.
‘‘It was a busy one,’’ Fahey said. ‘‘We had a great Friday night and Saturday was exceptionally busy.’’ New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve were often the two most supported days of the carnival, he said.
‘‘We’ve got everything happening New Year’s Eve ... and then everybody comes back on New Year’s Day, people wanting to start the new year come down and see what’s happening at the bay. This weekend has also been hugely busy with the AC/DC and the David Bowie tribute, because there’s been a lot of talk and a lot of people want to come and see it, and that was evident and obvious on Saturday night by the crowd that we had here.’’
