An overcast day did not deter more than 250 taking part in a Take a Kid Fishing event held at Fisherman’s Wharf on Sunday.

Hunting and Fishing Timaru store owner Alister Jones said it was an ‘‘awesome turnout’’ as people lined up near Caroline Bay to reel in the catch of the day.

Jones said the best part of the day was seeing families down at the wharf having a go.

He said people from beginners to experienced fishermen took part.

‘‘The whole event was just about community engagement; coming out, enjoying the day, having a go at fishing, and it was a brilliant day.’’

Jones said catches ranged from typical wharf fish to someone even catching a massive stingray.

‘‘We look at events like this and their success, and you look forward to it next year with a really positive view, to try and make the event even bigger and better.’’

Another fishing competition, the Hook Beach Fishing Competition, will be held on January 19.
