Businesses thrilled to make finals of excellence awards

-

From a record number of nominations, the cream of South Canterbury’s business community has been sorted for the region’s business awards.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce yesterday announced the finalists in 10 categories of the Business Excellence Awards, praising the high calibre of the entries.

Chamber chief executive Wendy Smith said they were thrilled with the engagement they have had with businesses this year leading into the awards.

‘‘The judges’ feedback indicates they have had a daunting task selecting the finalists.

‘‘The entries have been of a very high standard, demonstrating the professionalism and passion that makes South Canterbury such a wonderful place to work.’’

Smith said many of the entrants and finalists said they found the entry process to be beneficial.

‘‘Reflecting on and reviewing their performances, the businesses share and celebrate their achievements.

‘‘The People’s Choice voting now commences, and this is another fantastic opportunity to engage clients, suppliers, friends and family in recognising and profiling local business.’’

A record number of nominations were received and the chamber said in June there had been a 20 per cent increase from last year and ‘‘nominations reached almost 300’’.

Barkers of Geraldine food processing chairman Michael Barker was thrilled at being a finalist for the Agribusiness Producer Manufacturer Award for a third time.

‘‘It’s very exciting and very rewarding to be nominated again,’’ he said.

After winning twice – in 2014 and 2009 – Barker said the nomination was great recognition for his staff and everyone involved with the operation.

‘‘We won five years ago and 10 years ago but we’re hoping for the best this time.

‘‘We are not expecting to win.’’ Aoraki Migrant Centre is a finalist for the Community Impact Award.

Manager Katy Houstoun said it felt great to receive the acknowledgment of the business community. ‘‘It is exciting,’’ she said. ‘‘Having the business community know what we do is a benefit.

‘‘Holistic support is more appreciated to make people feel like they are part of the community.’’

The announcement of the finalists also launches voting for the ANZ People’s Choice Award that will continue until August 16.

Winners will be announced at a gala night on August 23 at the Caroline Bay Hall.

‘‘The celebration at the gala awards night in August is an amazing opportunity to share the stories and successes of our local businesses,’’ Smith said.
