Man facing kidnap trial denied bail

-

A South Canterbury man facing 13 charges including indecent assault and kidnapping has been denied electronically-monitored bail.

The 59-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, has pleaded not guilty to indecently assaulting a female over 16, two counts of kidnapping, four of unlawfully carrying a firearm, committing burglary with a weapon, assaulting a person with a blunt instrument, injuring with intent to injure, possessing methamphetamine, possessing methamphetamine for supply, and receiving property.

Judge Kevin Phillips rejected the application for electronicallymonitored bail in the Timaru District Court yesterday.

‘‘The extent of the allegations here provide me with the clear view that anything short of a full custodial remand would be insufficient to protect the [alleged] victims or mitigate the risk of reoffending,’’ Judge Phillips said.

The defendant was remanded in custody until February 25.

Remanded for sentence

A Timaru man has admitted punching a man in the neck, shoving his girlfriend into a door frame and breaking the window of a car.

Terrence Collins, 26, pleaded guilty to common assault, assault on a person in a family relationship, and two counts of wilful damage when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips.

Collins pleaded not guilty to the assaults at an earlier appearance but yesterday pleaded guilty.

Police prosecutor Toaiva Hitila said Collins’ first offence was committed during an argument ‘‘over a mutual female friend’’ last January.

‘‘The argument got heated and the defendant punched the complainant once with a closed fist, hitting him in the left-hand side of his neck.’’

Six months later, Collins was intoxicated when he began arguing with his girlfriend.

‘‘The defendant had spent the afternoon drinking and continued to consume beer,’’ Hitila said.

‘‘The defendant pushed the complainant with force into a door frame, causing her to fall to the ground.’’

The victim suffered a headache and a cut to her head.

On August 16, Collins punched the rear left window of a car parked outside his house.

The window broke, causing cuts to Collins’ right hand.

He left the area and police were at the scene when Collins and several associates returned.

Collins challenged the officers to a fight, grabbing a stick and swinging it at a vehicle, which he dented.

Collins was remanded on bail until April 3 for sentencing.
