Siblings do a big bit to aid Aussies
As bushfires continue to rage across Australia, three Temuka siblings are doing their bit to help out those caught up in the blazes.
Jonathon, 7, Nikita, 11, and Abigail Middleton, 10, have organised a fundraising garage sale, on Saturday, with all money made going to The Salvation Army Disaster Appeal.
What began as a question from Nikita about what she could do to help Australians affected by the fires, has turned into a major community project with a garage full of donated items, mother Sarah Middleton said.
‘‘It all came about last Wednesday,’’ Sarah said.
‘‘Nikita and I had just had lunch and decided to see what was happening with the fires.
‘‘We saw how quite a few people had lost everything and then Nikita went off to her bedroom.
‘‘She went through to her sister and brother’s rooms and then they all came through with an armful of stuff they wanted to sell to make money to give to Australia.’’
Not knowing where to donate the items to, Sarah put a post on social media explaining the situation and asking where the children could give their toys away.
‘‘People then started saying ‘I have this and that’.
‘‘On Wednesday at lunch time we had nothing, then by Wednesday night a garage full of stuff at our house and then by Thursday there was too much stuff for the house,’’ Sarah said.
Since then the Middleton children have organised the garage sale, to be held at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Temuka.
‘‘They’ve organised it all themselves and I’ve got the venue organised and will do some baking to sell.
‘‘It’s been the kids that have done all this and it’s absolutely a community thing. The garage is full and stuff is still coming,’’ she said.
New World supermarket has donated the baking ingredients, and Sarah has also set up an online fundraising page.
The hall has also been given to the fundraiser with no hire fee, she said.
Sarah said she was proud of her children for organising the event, describing them as ‘‘empathetic’’.
Any leftover items from the garage sale will be given to The Salvation Army.
The garage sale will run from 9am-12.30pm at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Temuka..
