Latest record a shoe-in

-

Yet another world record has fallen to a distance runner wearing Nike’s controversial, hi-tech shoes. Ababel Yeshaneh, of Ethiopia, ran a half-marathon in the United Arab Emirates in 1:04:31 on Saturday, besting the previous mark for a women by 20 seconds. ‘‘I didn’t imagine this result,’’ she said. Yeshaneh appeared to be wearing a version of the Nike Vaporfly shoe, which features unusually thick foam and carbon in its sole, a technological advancement aimed at making runners more efficient. Over the past two years, elite-level competitors wearing some form of the Vaporfly have broken the records for the men’s and women’s marathon and halfmarathon. Amid calls for legislation, the international track federation has stopped short of banning the shoes but did issue new parameters last month.

Sonny Bill Williams teamed up with his namesake at the Toronto Wolfpack’s Super League match at the weekend. The 34-yearold former All Black and Kiwis star met Sonny Bill Brown, a 6-year-old named after the codehopping New Zealander. The Latchford Albion club joked on Twitter about two Sonny Bills playing in Warrington, a tweet that quickly gathered attention and resulted in Williams direct messaging the club to say he wanted to meet the youngster ahead of his debut for the Latchford Giants under-seven rugby team. SBW invited SBB to the Toronto Wolfpack v Warrington Wolves match, which was won 32-22 by the hosts, with Brown walking out as SBW’s individual mascot before kickoff.
