Second Levin quake

-

A strong earthquake shook the lower North Island yesterday. GeoNet said the magnitude-5.2 quake was 33 kilometres deep and centred 30km northwest of Levin. It occurred at 12.34pm and followed a magnitude5.8 quake at the same location on Monday morning. Some train services were suspended for a short time following yesterday’s quake but passengers were advised to expect further delays and cancellations. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said there had been no reports of damage. There have been 19 smaller earthquakes in the area between the two strong shakes on Monday and yesterday. GeoNet said 14 of those were classed as ‘‘weak’’ and five ‘‘light’’. Horowhenua mayor Bernie Wanden was walking Levin’s streets when the shake occurred. He said people’s anxieties were beginning to run high because of the numerous aftershocks. ‘‘I think a lot of people are feeling a little bit anxious and fearful.’’
