Singh a winner with Bayern
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Sarpreet Singh is now a Bundesliga champion and has the shirt to prove it, after Bayern Munich edged Werder Bremen 1-0 yesterday to clinch a record eighth consecutive championship with two games to spare. The All Whites midfielder was an unused substitute but joined in what were rather muted celebrations given the match was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 precautions. Singh is the second Kiwi to win Germany’s top-flight competition, after Wynton Rufer scored 17 goals to spearhead Bremen’s championship-winning campaign in 1993. Singh will collect a winner’s medal despite playing just the one competitive game for Bayern, coming off the bench in the final stages of the team’s 6-1 win over Bremen in December.
New Zealand rugby player Michael Fatialofa has made an emotional return to the Worcester Warriors, five months after a severe spinal injury left fears the big lock would never walk again. A beaming Fatialofa walked into his English club unassisted and received cheers from his teammates. There was a large banner reading ‘‘Welcome Back Fats’’ spread across the entrance of the club’s high performance centre where the 27-year-old will continue his rehabilitation. Fatialofa, who played for Auckland and Southland and won a Super Rugby title with the Hurricanes before taking his game to Britain, spent four months in the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital’s specialist spinal injuries unit, constantly amazing staff with his determination.
