Big Save Furniture expands into Timaru

- Al Williams

A New Zealand family-owned business with 25 stores and about 350 staff nationwide has confirmed its expansion into Timaru.

Big Save Furniture will open on Evans St on December 3.

A company director, Lily Salter, said the Timaru branch would serve two purposes – a furniture and bed showroom and a new South Island warehouse.

‘‘We are super excited to finally be opening our store in Timaru,’’ Salter said.

‘‘We have had a number of delays with the opening. We had hoped to have opened earlier this year but Covid-19 changed that for us.

‘‘We identified a couple of years ago that there was a lack of furniture and bed choice in

Timaru as our other stores in the South Island all had a large customer base from Timaru.’’

Salter said they had been looking at buying a store in Timaru for a couple of years.

‘‘The perfect store came up earlier this year at 189 Evans Street. We have spent the last three months renovating the store.’’

The Timaru site is the former home of ITM which moved operation to Seadown Rd Washdyke in 2017.

Salter said Big Save is New Zealand’s largest privately-owned furniture company.

‘‘My father (Ray McKimm) started Big Save Furniture in Paraparaumu in 1973.’’

Salter added they had some ‘‘exciting firsts’’ planned for the Timaru opening. its in
