The perfect recipe to make for special day
Sophie Lloyd is looking forward to a sleep-in tomorrow, following what looks to be a busy day at the Timaru Farmers’ Market.
Today’s market, honouring Mother’s Day, will include 50 stalls with a mix of food and gifts.
Lloyd, a Pleasant Point motherof-two, said it may only be a small sleep-in she gets as she has to take one daughter to a gymnastics competition.
She will be at the market today selling her homemade gluten-free, and vegan, Italian macarons.
‘‘My daughter Elsie, who is eight, helps me with the money.’’
Lloyd, a baby sleep consultant who co-owns a diesel mechanic business, said she loves making the challenging recipe.
‘‘It took me six attempts to get it right and even now sometimes I get a failed batch and I don’t know why. It’s very time-consuming but satisfying,’’ Lloyd said.
She put her persistence down to the macarons tasting ‘‘so delicious’’.
She started selling them at the Pleasant Point Market last spring and expanded to the Timaru market last month. In one morning, Lloyd can sell about 150 of the sweet treats.
‘‘I love the market, meeting and talking to people and making connections.’’
Timaru Artisan Farmers Market co-ordinator Andrea Hutton said today’s market will also include a Filipino family busking to add to the atmosphere.
She said the market was busy and continuing weekly over winter with about 20 to 30 regular stalls (depending on weather), and plans were afoot for Matariki, and MidWinter market days.
‘‘It’s a nice community among the stallholders, and they enjoy interacting with each other and the public,’’ Hutton said.
The Mother’s Day Market will be held from 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday, outside the Landing Service Building on George St.
