Second dinghy defector escapes from China

-

The Taiwanese coast guard has detained a Chinese man who tried to reach the island’s territory in a rubber dinghy, in the such second crossing of the heavily patrolled Taiwan Strait in five days. The Chinese man, identified as being in his twenties and by the surname of Jiang, rowed an unpowered boat to the outlying island of Kinmen, which is not far from the mainland but part of Taiwan’s territory. It comes after another man named as Zhou travelled 178km from China in a 2.7-metre boat with an outboard motor to reach the self-governing island itself, claiming he was seeking ‘‘freedom and equality’’.
