Ko ready to recover at happy hunting ground

- Ian Anderson

Lydia Ko believes she can make a rapid recovery in form as she started her latest tournament on the LPGA Tour today.

The New Zealander will contest the Mediheal Championship in Daly City, California, after struggling to make an impact at the Women’s US Open last week.

After a promising start which had her among the leaders during the first round, Ko found problems off the tee, with unforgiving rough at the Olympic Club course and eventually finished tied for 49th.

However, she’s optimistic that it won’t take much to turn around her fortunes at a course she has fared well on in the past.

‘‘I wish I was coming into this week playing a little better, but I feel like it wasn’t far off,’’ Ko said.

‘‘It was just a handful of not-sogood shots last week and ended up becoming a few higher scores, and that can happen really easily, especially at a US Women’s Open.

‘‘With the weather and temperature being pretty similar I’m guessing between the two weeks, hopefully I would’ve done a lot of adjustments last week and kind of help for us this week.

‘‘Obviously last week wasn’t the week that I had hoped for, but in general I actually played solid. Sometimes you were going to hit good shots and you were still in the rough, and when you go in the rough it was pretty thick there.’’

Ko won the 2018 Mediheal Championship at the Lake Merced course, so knows what’s required as she seeks a second victory of the year.

‘‘I think your ball striking needs to be on, and it tends to be pretty windy here so just having that under control.’’
