Walking for her dad’s health

- Yashas Srinivasa

A Timaru woman is on the walk of her life to raise funds in support of her critically injured father.

Lily Muir, a 29-year-old assistant manager and personal trainer at Snap Fitness Timaru, began a 24-hour walk on a treadmill at 10am yesterday for her 62-year-old father who suffered a serious spinal injury in April.

Chris Muir, a Timaru truck driver, injured his C5 and C6 vertebrae, damaging his spinal cord while walking home from a friend’s house on April 10, when he fell over, his injuries leaving him paralysed from the chest down.

He was flown to the intensive care unit at Christchurch Hospital and later transferred to the Burwood Hospital Spinal Unit where he is undergoing treatment.

Funds raised from Lily’s walk will be used for travel and accommodation costs to keep a support person (Lily’s mother) with her father throughout his recovery.

‘‘He has a long road ahead of him as he undertakes intensive rehabilitation for the next six months and beyond to learn how to function with this level of injury and hopefully regain some feeling and/or function in his arms and legs.

‘‘Chris’ stubborn nature will overcome and he is adamant he will be back playing snooker again,’’

Lily said. ‘‘We are so grateful for the love and supportive messages from our friends and family so far.’’

Lily said her mother, Jenny, was staying with Chris at Burwood Hospital.

‘‘I would love to support Dad by keeping Mum by his side, covering any other unexpected costs throughout this process and keeping things at home ticking over for them,’’ Lily says on a Givealittle page she has started for her father.

The trucking company Chris works for, Dazman Contracting, has also added to the fundraising efforts by donating more than $1400 through employee contributions.
