Pacesetters TBHS face St Andrew’s

- Shourabh Vittalmurthy

Top of the table Timaru Boys’ High School 1st XV is hoping to retain its place when it takes on defending champions St Andrews College, in the Miles Toyota Rugby Championship interschool match in Timaru today.

With five wins and 24 points, Timaru Boys’ are comfortably placed on top of the points table. St Andrew’s sit in the sixth with three wins and two defeats, and keen to climb up the points ladder.

Timaru Boys’ director of sport, Gavin Miller, said the game against St Andrews College is one of the most important games in the championship for both sides.

‘‘It’s true that we have had a reasonable run of games, and probably the only top side that we have encountered this season until now has been Christ’s College. We have a series of tough games coming our way,’’ Miller said.

With Timaru Boys’ playing four interschool games a year, they have just two opportunities to play in front of the school and a home crowd.

He said both sides have a good mix of players, and the contest should be even.

‘‘We have attacked well this year. As the team has got a few boys who have played before and have experience playing at that level, we have been able to have a good run’’, Miller said.

Speaking on the opposition, Miller acknowledged St Andrews’ prowess.

‘‘St Andrew’s is a strong side, and they are the defending champions. They have got about two to three real good players and are one of the best teams in the competition.’’

Timaru Boys’ High School will take on St Andrew’s at Alpine Energy Stadium at 1.30 pm. If wet the game may be moved to School Park.
