Axe attack on Bay Hill

The man wanted in connection with an axe attack on a person near a strip of restaurant­s overlookin­g Timaru’s Caroline Bay on Thursday night is yet to be located.

Detective Sergeant Nick Osborne said the man remained at large as of 5pm yesterday, but he does not believe the man poses a threat to the public.

‘‘The victim may have been targeted on purpose,’’ Osborne said.

One person was taken to Timaru Hospital with moderate injuries following the attack on The Bay Hill about 8pm.

Police believe a kindling axe, which has been recovered, was used in the attack.

‘‘The victim received medical treatment at hospital and has since been discharged.’’

Earlier yesterday, a police spokespers­on said they were ‘‘following strong lines of inquiry’’ in relation to the offender.

A St John spokespers­on said they were notified of the incident at 8.11pm and transporte­d one patient with moderate injuries to Timaru Hospital.

A Bay Hill Brewery Bar spokespers­on declined to comment when contacted yesterday.
