Gwynne Dyer’s analysis in Saturday’s Timaru Herald is always worth reading, but I find myself disagreeing somewhat with his article last week headlined Pope barking up the wrong tree with scolding on war.
He quotes the likes of Jane Goodall to draw a comparison between humans and animals and similarities in behaviour. But humans are not animals; there is a fundamental difference.
Humans can take a journey inwards such as the Russian woman and her son reported in your columns last week. They live in Russia or New Zealand, whichever suits their narrowminded agenda. They will bend the rules to suit themselves.
Thus the son is pro the Russian invasion of Ukraine and at the same time is a draft dodger from the army. These people are totally self-absorbed.
On the other hand many humans have a concern for the community at large. Refugees are a major problem and a political football especially for the far right.
