Exhibition’s focus on special place

-

This image, taken by Hermann Frank, is part of the new Ō rari Gorge: Nature’s Hidden Gem exhibition that has just opened at the South Canterbury Museum. The exhibition draws on Hermann’s images, research and information to highlight the incredible landscapes and array of biodiversity found in this special part of our district. As well as being a place of some incredible views, the gorge area is an important refuge for many native plants, birds and smaller creatures.

For many locals, the Ō rari Gorge is notable for its wild beauty. Over thousands of years, the river has cut down into the valley floor, creating a deep narrow gorge. The surrounding hills and mountains, along with the wild rocky walls of the gorge itself, have created an area very different to the plains that the river then spills across on its journey to the sea.
