Amazing race joins sports week

- Doug Sail

Students from Waitaki to Ashburton were challenged with a variety of tasks during an amazing race event at Caroline Bay on Wednesday.

The Sport Canterbury South Canterbury event was part of junior sports tournament week in the Aoraki region and had 24 teams of four or five students, S regional sports co-ordinator Amanda Everett said.

From Monday to Thursday, activities were offered i outside the normal sports tournament week events, with a Ki O Rahi tournament and Top Team activities on Monday, relays and touch on Tuesday, the amazing race on Wednesday, and volleyball and beach rippa rugby on Thursday.

Everett said they started experimenting with different activities for the week in 2021, and they decided to offer the amazing race in 2022.

‘‘It is all about events for anyone to be a part of. We’ve developed it further this year making the events more accessible for more students.’’

Everett said teams had a full on fun day with questions and tasks at the Bay which created the need to strategise their thinking.

‘‘There were no rules. They were given a list and then had to work it out. All loved it, even though it was a windy day. It also showed the students that they could be active with very limited resources.’’
