unavailable for the Pakistan tour. New Zealand aborted their tour to Pakistan last year just hours before the first ODI in Rawalpindi because of an undisclosed security concern.

The test squad to face Pakistan will be named first, likely next week, with three spinners expected to be selected, led by Ajaz Patel. Pakistan in their own conditions is a massive challenge, but temperatures are cooler in their winter season.

‘‘When you look at playing in Pakistan, spin usually has a big factor, but we’ll have to see what factor it has at this time of the year as well. Traditionally there you get steady wickets that are lower bouncing and the wickets don’t tend to break as much as what they do in India, so it’s really a war of attrition a lot of the matches that you play over there.’’

As for the ODI series against India, the Black Caps’ sixth series win in the format from their last seven, rain caused plenty of frustration, after winning by seven wickets in the opener in Auckland, headlined by an unbeaten 221-run fourth wicket stand from Tom Latham and skipper Kane Williamson.

Rain hit in Christchurch during the Black Caps’ run chase as they were cruising to victory, but only batted 18 overs – not reaching the minimum of 20 to constitute a match.
