Positive ageing expo in Timaru
A Timaru expo aims to showcase positive choices older residents can make, but the event is not just for the elderly, organisers say.
With South Canterbury’s older population continuing to grow,
Age Concern South Canterbury has organised the Positive Ageing Expo at Caroline Bay Hall tomorrow.
A report, commissioned by the district’s economic development agency Venture Timaru in 2023, and prepared by economist Benje Patterson of People and Places, showed 30% of residents in the district were expected to be aged over 65 by 2050, compared to just over 20% aged 65-plus at present.
Age Concern South Canterbury manager Chris Thomas said as people were living longer than ever.
“As our population ages, it’s important for older people to stay informed,’’ Thomas said. The expo, in its second year, has had a positive response with all exhibition sites taken, he said.
“We’ve had a great response with 60 exhibitors from community groups and service providers meaning there will be loads of helpful and valuable resources for older adults in the region.
“It’s an opportunity for older people to sign up for services and clubs and get information to enhance their quality of life.’’ Stalls would cover health and wellbeing, mobility, recreation, safety, and retirement.
“From health screenings to demonstrations of mobility aids, the expo helps attendees through their ageing journey.’’
The expo would be held at the Caroline Bay Hall from 10am to 3pm. Entry would be by gold coin donation to support the work of Age Concern South Canterbury.
