I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Olivia Newton-John. I think it probably stems back to being a teenager in the 70s and watching her in the movie Grease. And, no, it wasn’t just those skin-tight leather pants in the final scenes. I wouldn’t say I was hopelessly devoted to the Australian singer/actress but I definitely know I am not alone in admiring her from afar. Because my view of Olivia is affected by rose-tinted glasses, I am approaching the mini-series on her life, Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted To You (see story p8), with an appropriate degree of caution. Olivia has not been involved in the project which is an immediate reason to be wary. However, the drama has attracted a top cast including Delta Goodrem in the lead role and New Zealand’s Robyn Malcolm as Olivia’s mum. The mini-series has the potential to be dire but it may also be strangely compelling as well. I’m certainly prepared to give it a go and see what it is like, even just for old time’s sake.
