Isn’t it funny how times change? Take holidays. As children in the UK, there was nothing myself and my siblings wanted more than to spend a week at a Butlin’s holiday camp. We would beg, bargain, and make rash promises, all of which fell on deaf ears as we made our annual pilgrimage to the Isle of Wight. It’s Su Pollard I have to thank for this little trip down memory lane. We caught up with her this week to coincide with the arrival of her classic British comedy Hi-de-Hi on the Jones! channel (story p18). Su won a place in viewers’ hearts as a holiday camp chambermaid who longed to be a yellow coat. Unlike me, she realised her dream – even if it was only for a day. But did you know, the first Butlin’s holiday camp in Skegness is now protected as Grade II listed – because it’s a piece of UK history. A bit like Su really who is regarded as a national treasure. I wonder what Peggy would have thought of that. julie.eley@stuff.co.nz
