US Open the target

The TV Guide - - SPORTS -

Phil Mickelson has achieved a huge amount as a golf professional. He has won 43 events on the PGA tour including five major championships and is one of just 16 players to win at least three of the four majors.

But there is one title the San Diego-born golfer would love to capture – the US Open. He has come agonisingly close on many occasions, finishing runner-up a record six times.

Time may be running out for the 47 year old but, like his long-time rival Tiger Woods, there have been signs this year that he is coming back into top form.

Until this year, Mickelson had been winless on the PGA tour since 2013. But that all ended when he won the WGC-Mexico Championship in March.

One tournament win doesn’t make a season but it does provide a huge confidence boost.

Only five players (Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player

and Gene Sarazen) have achieved golf’s grand slam – winning all four majors. Mickelson is just a US Open title away from joining them.
