Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool
Starring Annette Bening, Jamie Bell. Director Paul McGuigan.
In real life, Gloria Grahame was an Oscar-winning star in the 1950s. But she was beset by insecurity and scandal. She met aspiring actor Peter Turner during her career’s long decline, in the unlikely setting of a cheap London boarding house where they were both lodgers. She was 54, he was 26. Turner’s book about their affair is the basis of this film and it does gloss over darker aspects, such as Grahame’s battle with breast cancer. But it is a joyous experience, made so by the chemistry between Bening (who looks remarkably like Grahame) and Bell.
