Mum issues

Lesley Manville (below), who played a ruthless brothel owner in Harlots, returns as widowed mother Cathy for the second season of Mum. (The show’s first season was on TVNZ 1.) In the British comedy drama, Manville’s character is turning 60 and is busy juggling the demands of immediate and extended family members while being gently pursued by her late husband’s friend Michael (Peter Mullan). There are touches of awkward humour from Cathy’s grouchy parents and her son’s not-particularly bright girlfriend Kelly (Lisa McGrillis) who likes looking at photos of overweight celebrities in magazines. Watch out for ex-Call The Midwife actress Dorothy Atkinson who is brilliant as Cathy’s judgmental sister-in-law Pauline. Streams on Lightbox.
