Coro’s musical chairs continues
Is it not time we all stopped being polite regarding the times that Coronation Street is starting at nights. John Kelly, TVNZ General Manager of Programming, just doesn’t get it. All the complaint letters in the world will not help. We are not all older people who hate late viewing but many of us work in pressured, tiring jobs and actually go to bed, especially in winter, around 9pm. I find it impossible to stay awake for TV viewing any later and I’m fit and healthy. I owe it to my employers to be rested at the start of each day. Maybe Mr Kelly spends time socialising with the other movers and shakers, then gets home late to watch TV?

As an on-again off-again watcher of Coronation Street and having watched the special From Here To Now along with the new nightly episodes, I’m not sure why anyone would be bothered about what they might miss due to the changes by TVNZ. As far as I can tell, it is just more of the same – the characters playing musical chairs in terms of romantic partners, each character getting their turn at being in prison, and nearly all of the characters lying to and deceiving each other, the reasons for which are usually hard to fathom. Combined with the dark and violent storylines (Pat Phelan, Aidan Connor, David Platt) and despite the occasional comedic gem, for me it provides little entertainment.

I will definitely not be watching the latest Coronation Street episodes because I gave up watching it months ago. Coronation Street is nothing like it used to be years ago when I enjoyed watching it. The actors were older and more sensible then and the storylines were always entertaining. Since the introduction of this younger set with their ongoing problems and scatty behaviour and low morals, there is not a sensible one among them. No one with a brain could find it entertaining to watch. It has had its day well and truly. Kill it off.
