Missed the boat for standout series
I was so looking forward to watching the first episode of the series Uncharted With Sam Neill (Prime, Sundays) but accidentally forgot to record it. Never mind I thought they are bound to repeat the first episode before next Sunday. But, alas, I cannot find this nor can I watch it (or find it) On Demand. Surely such a great documentary should be repeated as there must be many elderly who would enjoy watching it earlier in the day. This isn’t the first time I’ve been disappointed at Prime for not repeating a programme.

At last, could this be a turning point for New Zealand television viewing? This programme (Uncharted With Sam Neill) is a stand-out of informative history at its best. Sam Neill delivers a casual, relaxed but revealing study of Captain Cook’s “discovery voyage” of all the places visited by Cook and does so with dulcet tones, never set to bore, clear enunciation and a genuine respect of all he met on the way. Captain Cook, we were told, was famous for this part of his historic voyaging inasmuch “discovering” lands which were well and truly already populated with native inhabitants and probably so for many generations (seemingly) mostly happy with their gods and lifestyle. So, in essence, Captain Cook’s “discovery” was more a case of “discovering” already discovered and populated lands. Well, a lot of history is maimed by “Rule Britannia” or maybe “We are Simply The Best”. Time will tell, again. Please, more of the slightly shy Sam. He is eloquent, charming and classy.

The series Uncharted With Sam Neill is outstanding. But I would love to see a full-on, epic drama series about Captain Cook’s voyages. Perhaps Sam could play Cook?
